~ Emergency Service

In the event of an emergency, call us immediately at (860) 677-4400.  During office hours emergencies take precedence over all other activities.  After office hours you will be referred to the Farmington Valley Veterinary Emergency Hospital (FVVEH) (MAP) in Avon located at 9 Avonwood Road - off Rt. 10 - (860) 674-1886.   Please indicate to the admitting technician that you were referred by Farmington Animal Hospital.  Your records will then be forwarded to us for any necessary follow-up care.  If overnight attention is required,  your pet  will remain at the FVVEH throughout the night and will then be released back to us for continued treatment.

~ Preventive Health Care

Immunization
TLCMany contagious diseases that can affect your pet are ever-present in our area.  Some of these diseases can be prevented by properly immunizing your pet.  Immunizing your pet not only helps to protect your pet but also aids in controlling the spread of these diseases.

Neutering
There are several good reasons to neuter your pet.  First, neutering prevents litters of unwanted pets.  Second, neutering may help to prevent certain undesirable behavior problems your pet could develop. Finally, neutering may help prevent diseases of the reproductive system.

General Health Care Maintenance
There are many other areas of preventative care specific to your pet that we will address at the time of your visit.  Important health care concerns for each of your pet's life stages from pediatric, to adult, to geriatric will be discussed with you.  This care includes dental cleanings, parasite control, diet, grooming, and behavioral training to mention just a few.  Regular appointments with your veterinarian will keep you updated on your pet's health condition and keep you informed of the latest products and procedures available for your pet's health maintenance.

~ Outpatient - Diagnostic Work-up/Medical Treatment

When your pet is admitted with a problem that may require medical examination and treatment we request that you restrict any food from your pet from midnight of the night before the pet is brought in.   This will allow us to obtain more accurate results from tests performed and will allow us to treat your pet immediately.

When your pet is discharged after an examination please regard carefully the personalized instructions outlined by your veterinarian.  Following these directions will allow your doctor to evaluate your pet's progress.

~ Hospitalized Patient - Surgery

Elective surgeries are scheduled during our surgery hours.  All other surgical procedures are scheduled by the attending veterinarian.  In most cases your pet will be admitted to the hospital the day of the surgery.  It is important to remember not to feed your pet any time after midnight the night before a surgery unless otherwise directed.   After surgery has been completed we will call you with a report on your pet's status and give you a tentative discharge time.

At the time your pet is discharged please listen carefully to our post-operative instructions.  The success of many cases depends on proper after-care.  After you have returned home please call us if you have any suspicion that your pet is not recovering as planned or if events occur that were not discussed with your doctor.

Special attention must be given to pets with splints, casts, sutures, and bandages.  Be sure they are kept clean, dry, and intact.  On occasion we may outfit your pet with an elizabethan collar.   This is to prevent your pet from disturbing a treated area.  While these collars may may appear a bit cumbersome, they will keep your pet from aggravating a wound site and help to prevent an additional unplanned visit with us.

~ Boarding - Daily Care
